Agate cup, (1881). Creator: W. M. McGill
Agate cup, (1881). Etching of a cup made of agate with silver mounts, made in Britain by Roger Flint. It was bought in 1867 as an Elizabethan masterpiece, but the various elements date from different periods. The bowl is probably a later replacement, made in India in the late 18th or early 19th century. The stem and foot were made in Antwerp, c1550-1560. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]
