Visit of the Queen to Waddesdon Manor, Bucks: receiving a bouquet in the Market Square, Aylesbury, 1890. The visit of her Majesty [Queen Victoria], accompanied by Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg, to Waddesdon Manor, near Aylesbury, the seat of Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, M.P. on Wednesday, May 14, was mentioned in our last [issue]...A carriage and four, escorted by the Bucks Yeomanry, in Hussar uniform, under Captain Higgins and Lieutenant the Hon. Walter Rothschild, conveyed the Royal visitors to Waddesdon, passing through the town. The streets were gaily decorated, and there were four triumphal arches. In the Market-square, in front of the County Hall, a crowd of people were assembled. The carriage stopped here, and Mr. T. Horwood, Chairman of the Local Board, wearing his uniform as Major of the Volunteers, presented an address of welcome. His little daughter, Judith Agatha, seven years old, gave the Queen a bouquet of roses, lilies-of-the-valley, and yellow heather. The National Anthem was sung by a choir of schoolchildren. In the evening the streets of Aylesbury were illuminated'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector/Heritage Images
