United States Battleship Indiana, c1890s
United States Battleship Indiana, c1880. The first ship to bear the name, the USS Indiana entered service with the US Navy in 1895. She played an important role in the destruction of the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on 3 July 1898 during the Spanish-American War. The Indiana was decommissioned in 1919 and sunk as a target ship in Chesapeake Bay during Navy aerial bombing tests
