The Abbey Bridge, Tavistock...A bronze colossal statue of Sir Francis Drake has been presented to the town by the Duke of Bedford, ...whose ancestor, Sir Francis Russell, was godfather to this hero of the sixteenth century...The statue, which is the work of Mr. Boehm, R.A. is 10 ft. high...and represents Admiral Drake standing bare-headed, with a mariner's compass in his hand...On the front is the inscription, "Sir Francis Drake, one of the first who in his voyages put a girdle round the globe." The monument was unveiled by the Portreeve, Mr. J. W. Daw, in the presence of a large concourse of people, after a grand procession through the town, of which, and of the street decorations and triumphal arches, we give some Illustrations...The Portreeve...declared the statue to be the gift of the Duke of Bedford. Three cheers were given for his Grace, and a resolution was passed thanking him for his gift'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
