St. Pauls and the Neighbourhood in 1540, (1897). Creator: Unknown
St. Pauls and the Neighbourhood in 1540, (1897). This view shows London as it would have been in the 16th century; the medieval cathedral of St Pauls surrounded by fields, with Baynards Castle on the River Thames in the foreground. The wooden spire was destroyed in a fire in 1561, and the whole cathedral was burned down in the Great Fire of 1666. From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury.
