Sergeant Jasper recovering the flag, 1776 (c1880). William Jasper (c1750-1779) was a sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment in the American Revolutionary War. During the British bombardment of Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island, South Carolina, he recovered the South Carolina flag after the flagpole was shot away, holding it aloft until a replacement flagstaff could be found. He was killed in 1779 during the attempt to take Savannah, Georgia from the British.
