School for deaf and dumb infants at Old Trafford, Manchester [opened recently], 1860. The institution was opened to supply a very great want. Children would be admitted at the early age of three years; accommodation being at present provided for fifty children from that age to seven years...The building covers an area of 577 yards...It comprises sheltered playgrounds in the lower story; and, above, a schoolroom; a dining-hall; male dormitory; female dormitory; a chamber for the sick, and one for the convalescent; nurses rooms, linen-closets, bath-rooms, lavatories, committee-room, also apartments for the housekeeper and domestic servants. The walls are hollow, as a preventive of damp; the facade is of stone; the staircases throughout are fireproof...Messrs. Bowden, Edwards, and Forster were the builders'.
