'Reading the Will', c1820. The numerous heirs gather round the lawyer seated at the table, on which are coins, bottles and glasses. One stands close with an ear trumpet. The belongings of the recently deceased spill out of a trunk in the foreground. The work is said to have been inspired by the novel "Guy Mannering" by Sir Walter Scott. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson, 5 March 1868, (1872). Johnson (1808-1875), seventeenth President of the United States, succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His term lasted from 1865 to 1869. He was impeached in 1868 but was acquitted.
