The sanctuary of the Church of St Martins le Grand, London, 1754 (1906). St. Martins le Grand was a former parish and liberty within the City of London, The church was founded c1056 by two brothers called Ingelric and Girard, during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066). The foundation was confirmed by a charter of William the Conqueror (1028-1087) dating from 1068. The church was responsible for the sounding of the curfew bell in the evenings, which announced the closing of the Citys gates. It was dissolved by King Henry VIII (1491-1547) and demolished in 1548.
