Framed Print of Queen Jane interposing between Northumberland and Simon Renard, 1553 (1840). Artist: George Cruikshank
Queen Jane interposing between Northumberland and Simon Renard, 1553 (1840). Lady Jane Grey intervening in an argument between the Duke of Northumberland and the Ambassador of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. A grandniece of Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen on Edward VIs death in 1553 in an attempt to secure a Protestant succession. Only a few days later Henrys eldest daughter, the Catholic Mary Tudor, claimed the throne. Jane was deposed and imprisoned in the Tower of London. She was executed for high treason, at the age of 16, on Tower Hill on 12th February 1554. The Duke of Northumberland, the architect and principal supporter of Janes claim to the throne, was also executed. A print from The Tower of London a Historical Romance, by William Harrison Ainsworth. (London, 1840). Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector / Heritage-Images
