St Dunstan and the devil, 1826

St Dunstan and the devil, 1826. Born in Glastonbury, Somerset, St Dunstan (c925-988) became Archbishop of Canterbury in 961. The patron saint of goldsmiths, this illustrates the legend that when interrupted while making a golden chalice, he seized the devil by the nose with red hot pincers and would not release him until he promised not to tempt Dunstan ever again.
