Framed Print of Palace of the Rana of Meywar, at Oodeypore, 1868. Creator: Unknown
Palace of the Rana of Meywar, at Oodeypore, [Udaipur, India], 1868. Engraving representing...the Palace of the Rana, or Maharana, of Meywar...with the tripolia or three-arched gate which leads into the courtyard. The little square block of stone seen in the roadway under the shadow of the tree was the first building of any kind in Oodeypore. When Rana Oodeysing [ie Udai Singh II] left Chittore [Chittorgarh] on its capture by the Mogul army he went in search of a site for his palace and a new capital, and while passing over the present site of Oodeypore, which was then a jungle, a hermit, who lived on the mound and had built the little square mass of stones seen in the picture, told the Rana to build his palace by that spot, and so long as the stones remained he would not lose his throne. This was about the year 1570, so the prophecy has held good for nearly 300 years'. From Illustrated London News, 1868.
