Opening of the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway - Duddon Sands Viaduct, 1850. One of the interesting objects on the line is the viaduct across Duddon Sands, [which forms] the boundary between Cumberland and Lancashire. [The viaduct is] a very handsome wooden structure, and of great strength...it is nearly 400 yards long, and has no less than forty-nine openings'.
