Framed Print of New pier and government offices, Limasol, Cyprus, 1881. Creator: Unknown
New pier and government offices, Limasol, Cyprus, 1881. On the 6th October one of the most useful public works constructed by the British Government of Cyprus, the new pier at Limasol, on the south coast of the island, was dedicated to public use by Sir Robert Biddulph, the High Commissioner. Limasol is a town of five or six thousand people, and the chief port for the shipment of Cyprus wine, olive oil, and Carob beans; its open roadstead is not very safe or convenient, but it ranks second to Larnaca for the total amount of shipping and traffic. The new pier is a well-designed iron structure, 600 ft. long, which will be a great accommodation to vessels loading or unloading; and some adjacent buildings have been erected for the Government offices. The progress of trade at Limasol during the English administration is illustrated by figures, showing that the total of the imports and exports had increased from £85, 904 in 1878 to £140, 439 in 1879, and £143, 577 in 1880...The total tonnage of shipping also, which for the first six months of 1880 was 36, 435, had doubled during the same period in 1881'.
