Mrs. Hugh [i.e. Hugo] Johnstone, 30 May 1917. Captain Charles Albert Adams (1846-1929) (left), a U.S. naval officer who served as the commander of the USS Recruit, a wooden mockup of a battleship built in Union Square, New York City by the Navy to recruit seamen and sell Liberty Bonds during World War I. With Adams are Mrs. Mitchel (later Mrs. Hugo Johnstone), wife of New York Mayor John Purroy Mitchel (1879-1918) and Mayor Mitchell. The photograph was taken on Memorial Day, May 30, 1917, the day of the "launch" of the ship
