Framed Print of Monument in Glasgow Cathedral to the memory of...the 71st Regiment, by W. Brodie, R.S.A. 1868. Creator: Unknown

Monument in Glasgow Cathedral to the memory of officers and men the 71st Regiment, by W. Brodie, R.S.A. 1868. The monument which has been erected in Glasgow Cathedral to the memory of those officers and men of the 71st (Highland Light Infantry). Regiment who perished in the campaign of Eusofzai, on the north-west frontier of India, in 1863, is the work of Mr. William Brodie, R.S.A. one of the sculptors in repute at Edinburgh. The names of the deceased - Captains C. F. Smith and R. B. Aldridge, Ensign C. B. Murray, Lieutenants T. B. Dougall and T. Gore Jones, with a sergeant and twenty privates - are engraved on the front. Above is the standard of the regiment, inscribed with many victories in the Peninsular War, in the Crimea, and in our Indian empire. The figures on each side are good examples of the invention and skill of the sculptor. A young officer, on the one hand, places a wreath on the monument. On the other side an old soldier has led up a little boy, the son of the slain, to read his father's name. The expression of mingled grief and awe in the attitude of this orphan, as well as the kindly look and gesture of the soldier, is very well rendered in the marble'.
