Major-General Sir Henry Rawlinson, K.C.B, member of the Council for India, 1873. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. Elliott and Fry. Rawlinson...served in the Bombay army, was Resident in Persia, then Political Agent at Kandahar, and helped to keep that position safe during the Afghan War. In 1843 he became the British Political Agent in Turkish Arabia; he was afterwards British Consul at Bagdad, and Consul-General in Asiatic Turkey...he was elected a Director of the East India Company, in 1856...On the transfer of the Indian Government from the Company to the Queen's Administration, in 1858, he was appointed one of the Council to advise the Secretary of State for India...In April, 1859, he was sent as Special Envoy to the Court of Teheran...Sir Henry is well known to be a scholar of high attainments in Oriental philology, antiquities, and history. He has contributed much to the discussions of the Asiatic and Geographical Societies, especially with reference to the interpretation of Babylonian, Assyrian, and Persian cuneiform inscriptions. The Royal Geographical Society elected him President...He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society...and an honorary member of several foreign learned societies'. From Illustrated London News, 1873. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
