Lion de Waterloo, mid 19th century. War memorial on the site of the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium, fought on 8 June 1815 between Napoleons forces and a coaltion of the British under the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under Field Marshal Blucher. The Lions Mound marks the place where William II of the Netherlands was knocked from his horse by a musket ball to the shoulder. On the top of the large conical artificial hill is a memorial in the form of a statue of a lion (looking towards France), called La Butte du Lion. It is 140 feet high - including the Lion and Pedestal 200 feet. The circumference at the base is 1680 feet. The inclination is 34 degrees, and 226 stairs lead up to the summit
