Lebes, 50-1 BC. Cauldron with a Satyr.
Additional Info: From the front of this lebes or cauldron emerges a half-length figure of a drunken satyr, one of the companions of Dionysos, the god of wine. The young satyr, wearing a wreath and holding a drinking cup, snaps his fingers, throws his head back, and grins in Dionysiac ecstasy. He seems to grow from a swirl of flowering tendrils, grape leaves, and plants meant to refer to Dionysos. Wine and water would have been mixed and served in this lidded, bronze lebes, following the Greek custom of diluting the strong wine they produced. The luxuriously decorated lebes with spool feet is unique. No other vessel of this large size, showing such a variety of metalworking techniques, is known. Silver inlays form the satyr's eyes and teeth and many of the flowers. This was a costly item, attesting to the wealth and status of its owner. The vessel's excellent state of preservation implies that it comes from a tomb, where it may have been used as an offering to the gods or as a cinerary urn for cremated remains. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
