Framed Print of The late Sir Charles Fox, C.E. 1874. Creator: Unknown

The late Sir Charles Fox, C.E. 1874. Engraving from a photograph by Elliott and Fry, of an...eminent civil engineer...at the age of nineteen [he]...assisted Mr. Ericsson in the trial of locomotive engines at Rain-hill, on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, in 1829. He was placed by the late Mr. Robert Stephenson on the London and Birmingham Railway, then in course of construction...Upon the completion of this work he joined the late Mr. Bramah in the manufacturing firm of Bramah and Fox...he became senior partner in the firm of Fox, Henderson, and Co...Since the year 1857 he had practised in London as a civil and consulting engineer, with his two elder sons, who continue the business under the firm of Sir Charles Fox and Sons...He was the inventor of Fox's safety-switch, and contributed to the improvement of the permanent-way...His chief work was the building in Hyde Park for the Exhibition of 1851. The late Sir Joseph Paxton having suggested the idea of a structure of iron and glass, up to that time never applied on a large scale, Mr. Charles Fox was enabled, from his intimate knowledge of ironwork construction, to carry out the proposal, and with his own hand to work out most of the details'.
