The late General Jackson, 1845. Portrait of American soldier and US president Andrew Jackson. In 1812 he was ordered to take the field against the Indians in the South, and in all his engagements with them he was signally victorious...he was commissioned Major-General of the U.S. Army in 1812, and...routed the British troops in a number of skirmishes in the vicinity of New Orleans...Peace being restored, he retired to his farm near Nashville, Tennessee. In 1817 he was again called to the field to suppress the Seminole Indians of Florida. Jackson was appointed Governor of Florida, and was later elected President of the United States. The American public had been prepared for the death of this celebrated man, by the long illness that preceded his demise..."
