The late Empress Augusta of Germany and Queen of Prussia, 1890. Portrait from a photograph by Jamrath and Son, published by Carl Hockner....during the war of 1866 between Prussia and Austria, it was by her efforts and influence that, all over Germany, societies or guilds of women were formed under the Red Cross standard, in connection with the central organisation in Berlin. These societies had for their common object the care of the sick and wounded in public hospitals and in private dwellings, the relief of the families of absent soldiers, and the support of widows and orphans. The Empress recognised the vast importance of placing these beneficent organisations on a more enduring basis, in order that they might render help, not only in war time but during peace, on occasions when any part of the Fatherland was suffering from calamities, such as epidemics, famines, inundations, extensive railway accidents. The Red Cross on a white ground is the badge of the society...The object of the Red Cross Women's Union is not only to relieve suffering by money, but to comfort and permanently improve the condition of those who are assisted'. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
