King Richard II with his father Edward III, (1799)
King Richard II with his father Edward III, (1799). Regarded as one of the most successful of Englands medieval monarchs, Edward III (1312-1377) reigned from 1327. He was succeeded by his son Richard in 1377. In contrast to the stability of his fathers reign, Richard was confronted with a series of crises, ranging from the Peasants Revolt to a series of power struggles with prominent barons. Eventually, in 1399, he was deposed by Henry Bolingbroke, who ruled as Henry IV. He was imprisoned in Pontefract Castle, where he died in 1400, either murdered or left to starve to death.
