Framed Print of Jebel-El-Nur, regarded by Dr. Beke as Mount Sinai, 1874. Creator: Unknown

Jebel-El-Nur, regarded by Dr. Beke as Mount Sinai, 1874. Engraving from a sketch by John Milne - view...from the south, at the junction of Wady Amran with Wady-el-Ithem, near the foot of the mountain...some controversy has taken place regarding the correctness of the positions generally attributed to Mount Sinai and the other holy places connected with the history of the exodus of the Israelites...Dr. Beke came to the conclusion in his work Origines Biblicae, published in the year 1834, that Mount Sinai must be situated to the east of the meridian of the Gulf of Akaba and valley of the Jordan, and not to the west of it, where it has universally been placed...During the forty years that have elapsed since these views were enunciated, the author has only become more firmly attached to them; and towards the end of last year he undertook a journey, in which he was accompanied by Mr. John Milne, F.G.S. into the country lying to the east of the head of the Gulf of Akaba, where he felt firmly convinced he would find the true Mount Sinai. He has found what he considers to answer his expectation'. From Illustrated London News, 1874. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector/Heritage Images
