Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich of Russia with his wife and one of their sons, 1860. Grand Duke Konstantin (1827-1892) was the second son of Tsar Nicholas I and Alexandra Fyodorovna. He married Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg (1830-1911) in 1848. Their eldest son, Grand Duke Nicholas Constantinovich (1850-1918), was disgraced and banished to what is now Uzbekistan after becoming involved in a plot against his family. He settled in Tashkent, where he became a popular figure and worked as an engineer and irrigator, constructing canals. Grand Duchesses Vera Constantinovna of Russia and Olga Constantinovna of Russia, c1862-c1863. Grand Duchess Vera (1854-1912) and Grand Duchess Olga (1851-1926) were the daughters of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich, the second son of Tsar Nicholas I and Alexandra Fyodorovna, and his wife, Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna. Vera married Duke Eugen of Wurttemberg in 1874, but he was killed in a duel less than three years later. She never married again. Olga married King George I of Greece in 1867. She was the grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk

Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich of Russia, 1864. Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich (1827-1892) was the second son of Tsar Nicholas I and Alexandra Fyodorovna. During the reign of his brother, Alexander II, Konstantin was an admiral in the Russian Navy, which he was instrumental in reforming, and was also an important figure in bringing about the emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861. His liberal views caused him to fall out of favour when Alexander was assassinated and Konstantin's nephew, Alexander III, became tsar.
