Henry I, Duke of Guise, 1580, and Francis de Montmorency, 1576 (1882-1884)
Henry I, Duke of Guise, 1580, and Francis de Montmorency, 1576 (1882-1884). Guise as a general of infantry, and Montmorency as Marshal of France. Henry (1550-1588) was the founder of the Catholic League and a prominent figure on the Catholic side in the French Wars of Religion. He was one of the instigators of the St Bartholomews Day Massacre of Protestants in 1572. The Montmorency family were rivals of the Guises. Francis (1530-1579) was made a Marshal of France in 1559. He was a cousin of Gaspard de Coligny, the Protestant leader killed in the St Bartholomews Day Massacre. He was appointed to court by King Charles IX in 1574 but was compelled to leave due to the hatred between himself and Guise.
