Framed Print of The Government College and Oriental College, Lahore, with the Punjaub University Senate Hall, 1883. Creator: Unknown
The Government College and Oriental College, Lahore, with the Punjaub University Senate Hall, 1883. A feature of great interest and significance in the social condition of India under British Government is the willingness of the upper classes of natives...to provide liberally for the education of their own people...Dr. G. W. Leitner, the accomplished and indefatigable Principal... formerly Professor of Oriental Languages at King's College, London... [was appointed] the first Principal of the...College at Lahore...He felt the importance...of reviving the study of the classical languages of India. Arabic and Persian for the Mohammedans, and Sanscrit for the Hindoos, and using these, with their noble literature, as instruments of mental culture, while rendering the vernacular languages, equally with English, vehicles for the communication of European scientific and historical knowledge...[The] central feature [of the] stately Gothic edifice...is an imposing clock-tower. The College was built, of course, by the Government of the Punjaub. The Senate Hall of the University, which stands at a short distance, was built chiefly at the cost of the Nawab of Bhawulpore; it is a commodious building...with an arcade extending along the front'.
