3 - Otto Van Bismarck At Four Stages Of His Career, 1907

3 - Otto Van Bismarck At Four Stages Of His Career, 1907. Prince Bismark as Chancellor of the newly united German Empire, July 3, 1871. Otto Edward Leopold, Count von Bismarck (1815-1898) was Chancellor of Prussia and architect of modern Germany. His ambition was to unify the various independent German states into a single nation under Prussian leadership. The catalyst to bringing this about was the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, when the other German states fought alongside the Prussians. France was defeated, and in 1871, the German Empire was established, with Bismarck as Chancellor. From The World's History, Volume VIII, by Dr. H. F. Helmolt. [William Heinemann, London, 1907]

Title page of Experimenta Nova, ut vocant, Magdeburgica, de vacuo Spatio, (Amsterdam, 1672). New Magdeburgian Experiments, as they are called, relating to a Vacuum) by Otto von Guericke (1606-1686), German inventor, engineer and physicist, in which he published details of his invention of the air pump (1650), and his experiments on the power of air pressure. In the most famous of these, he used an air-pump to remove the air from between two large close-fitting copper hemispheres, known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The effect of the air pressure on the two hemispheres was such that two teams of 8 horses could not separate them. Once the air was let back into the enclosure, however, the hemispheres were parted easily

High Jinks!, 1886. Artist: Joseph Swain

High Jinks!, 1886. The Russian Bear can be seen dancing on Bulgarian soil, watched by Prince Bismarck of Germany and Britain's representative of law and order, Policeman A1 John Bull. This relates to the recent abdication of Prince Alexander of Bulgaria. Although he could have retained his crown, he was influenced in his decision to abdicate by the Czar of Russia who was ready to offer the Bulgarians the protection of Russia. Bismarck also advised Alexander to abdicate. The rest of the European powers portrayed an air of indifference to the whole episode. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 4, 1886
