High Jinks!, 1886. Artist: Joseph Swain
High Jinks!, 1886. The Russian Bear can be seen dancing on Bulgarian soil, watched by Prince Bismarck of Germany and Britains representative of law and order, Policeman A1 John Bull. This relates to the recent abdication of Prince Alexander of Bulgaria. Although he could have retained his crown, he was influenced in his decision to abdicate by the Czar of Russia who was ready to offer the Bulgarians the protection of Russia. Bismarck also advised Alexander to abdicate. The rest of the European powers portrayed an air of indifference to the whole episode. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 4, 1886
