The Bennie Railplane, 1930, (1933). Creator: Unknown

The Bennie Railplane, 1930, (1933). The George Bennie railplane is an astounding device by which existing railways could be speeded up for passenger traffic. Stream-lined cylindrical cars driven by air-screws fore and aft are suspended from a steel girder. The Railplane was a high-level electrically powered suspended monorail system, brainchild of Scottish inventor George Bennie, and designed by engineer Hugh Fraser. A prototype was installed over an LNER siding to Burnbrae Dyeworks at Milngavie, near Glasgow, in 1930, however Bennie was never able to get sufficient financial backing to develop the idea further. Traffic in Trafalgar Square, London, 1933. Creator: Unknown

Traffic in Trafalgar Square, London, 1933. Buses, taxis and pedestrians with the equestrian statue of King George IV on the left. Trafalgar Square's traffic lights, inaugurated by the Mayor of Westminster in March, 1933, are somewhat more elaborate than those elsewhere "Round-about" traffic had long been established there, but the success of automatic control - both for pedestrians and vehicles - has proved so successful that the authorities put up twenty-one standards at this point to direct the great "round-about". Bert Hinkler, 1933. Creator: Unknown

Bert Hinkler, 1933. Portrait of Australian pioneer aviator and inventor Hinkler (1892-1933), who in 1928 set up a record of 15 1/2 days for a solo flight to Australia, set out to beat his victor, C.R.W. Scott and the latter's conqueror, J.A. Mollison. After he started - silence. Only after some time of frantic searching was his wrecked machine and body found in the Appennines. So passed one of Britain's typical great men: modest, unassuming, efficient. Hinkler, dubbed Australian Lone Eagle, designed and built early aircraft and was the first person to fly solo from England to Australia. He was also the first person to fly solo across the Southern Atlantic Ocean. He died aged 40 after crashing into remote countryside near Florence, Italy during another solo flight record attempt. From "The Pageant of the Century". [Odhams Press Ltd, 1933]
