Landing of the Americans in Dalquiri'. The American army commanded by William Rufus Shafter landed in Daiquiri, 14-miles from Santiago, on 22nd June 1898, and were received by the Cuban General Demetrio Castillo. Two Natives Dispute Captain Cook's Landing'. James Cook, English explorer, navigator and hydrographer, 1775-1776. Captain Cook (1728-1779) in naval uniform. Cook made three voyages of discovery. On the first he observed the transit of Venus and charted the coasts of New Zealand and eastern Australia, claiming them for Britain, and on the second he explored the Southern Ocean. The main objective of his last voyage was to find a northern sea passage between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. He was killed when a fight broke out with natives in Hawaii. The arrival of Marie-Louise in Compiegne, France, 27th March 1810 (1882-1884). The Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria (1791-1847) was the second wife of Napoleon. They married in 1810. Marie-Louise's father, Francis I of Austria, favoured the marriage as he sought to strenthen links with France, while Napoleon was attracted by the legitimacy and prestige his empire would gain from a marital link to the Habsburgs.
