Vol II South East Coast: Cafre nation; Pl.64. from Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, c.1820-40 (colour lithograph). name derived from the Moslem word idolators; cafre/cafri/kaffir evolved during the pre-colonial period as an eqivalent of " negro" and is now considered an ethnic slur, more specifically term was later used as an exonym for the Bantu peoples of Southern Africa, to which it refers in this illustration; group by the huts of the Besciunana sub-tribe, with their utensils and domestic accoutrements, incl. metal; from the collection by Giulio Ferrario (1767-1847) of Costumi dei...
