Scenes on the Wissahickon, 1874. Creator: John J. Harley

Scenes on the Wissahickon, 1874. Mouth of the Wissahickon, Old Log Cabin - Bridge...Falls, Wissahickon Creek, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Its water-power has been made available for manufacturing purposes; but, as it has lately been included within the limits of Fairmount Park, it is understood that the unromantic mill-buildings will be soon removed, and nothing allowed to remain which can in any way interfere with its wild and picturesque beauty... these objectionable structures are not wholly unsightly; and the factories...are so shaded by foliage that, in conjunction with the arches of the bridges near by, they offer tempting bits of form and color for the artists pencil. The old log-cabin bridge...has attracted the attention of both amateur and professional sketchers nearly as much as the falls which give variety to one of its widest stretches. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant.
