Restoration of the Bab Mahrouk gate, Morocco
Restoration of the Bab Mahrouk gate, Fez, Morocco. Bab Mahrouk is a gate in the city walls of Fez. It was built in the late 12th century by the fourth Almohad Caliph, Mohammed en-Nasir. The gate has a macabre history. Its name translates as Gate of the Burnt, as a rebel was hanged and burned at the gate on the day it was completed, and it was later the place where the heads of executed people were displayed to the public
