African-American long-distance runner Ted Corbitt joined the New York Pioneer Club, the nations first integrated running organization, in 1947. Corbitt was a marathon champion and a pioneer of ultramarathons in the United States. He was among the first five athletes inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in Utica, N.Y. in 1998
