The German garrison of Windhoek, besieged by the Herero, South-West Africa, 1904
The German garrison of Windhoek, besieged by the Herero, South-West Africa, 1904. Disputes between German settlers and indigenous Herero hersmen over access to land and water led to an uprising and bloody conflict known as the Herero Wars. The war culminated in a genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples, many of whom were driven into the desert and left to starve, with their wells poisoned. An illustration from Le Petit Journal, 21st February 1904
