Fighting Horses, c. 1820. A dramatic vigor pervades Gericualts paintings and drawings, many of which present horses as the primary subject. The tragically short-lived artist was fascinated by the power and majesty of horses and was himself an avid rider. The brutalizing force that characterizes much of the artists work is very much evident in this watercolour, in which a groom struggles to separate a pair of fighting horses
