(Joseph) Austen Chamberlain (1863-1937), British statesman, born in Birmingham, was the eldest son of the statesman Joseph Chamberlain and half-brother of Neville Chamberlain, the future prime minister. He entered Parliament as a Conservative in 1892 and among the offices he held were Chancellor of the Exchequer (1903-1905 and 1919-1921), Secretary of State for India (1915-1917) and Lord Privy Seal (1921-1922).
