Framed Print of Fire at Greystoke Castle, Cumberland, 1868. Creator: Unknown
Fire at Greystoke Castle, Cumberland, 1868. The fire which...destroyed this fine mansion, the seat of Mr. Henry Howard, near Ulleswater, is the subject of an Engraving on our front page. It is now proved to have been caused by the ignition of two beams of wood adjoining the flue which ran from the dining-room to the picture-gallery. The fire was first perceived by Mrs. Howard while in her dressing-room about midnight. A messenger was sent to Penrith for the fire-engine; but the distance being six or seven miles, it arrived too late to stop the mischief. By four o'clock in the morning the main building was completely gutted; the tower was saved. A few valuable pictures, most of the books in the library, and many precious articles in the drawing-room were also saved, amongst which are the portraits of Erasmus and of Archbishop Warham, both painted by Holbein'.
