Framed Print of The Easter Volunteer Manoeuvres: defeat of the Invading Force at Summerhouse Hill, Folkestone, 1890. Creator: P Naumann
The Easter Volunteer Manoeuvres: defeat of the Invading Force at Summerhouse Hill, Folkestone, 1890. British Army training exercises - members of the public watching machine gun in action. The manoeuvres at Folkestone came to an end with a sham fight in the neighbourhood of Caesar's Camp. Heavy and squally weather prevailed during the whole time. The South London Volunteer Brigade was divided into an invading and defending force...The invading force marched up the hillsides in a storm of wind and rain, and took up a strong position at Caesar's Camp, from which the defenders endeavoured to dislodge them...Finally, it appeared that the vigour of the attack was too much for the defence of Caesar's Camp, where, at last, outnumbered by men and weight of artillery, the invaders were defeated shortly before one o'clock...It was in every sense a day to put Volunteers upon their mettle, and they responded well to the call made upon them'.
