The departure from Berlin, 1904
The departure from Berlin, 1904. Protesters attack German soldiers on their way to fight the war in South-West Africa. Germany became involved in a war in its colony of South-West Africa (Namibia) after an uprising by the indigenous Herero people. 15, 000 troops were dispatched to the colony under the command of General Lothar von Trotha. After the Herero were defeated Trotha ordered a campaign of genocide against them, resulting in the deaths of 65, 000 Herero and 10, 000 people of the Nama tribe.
