Death of Sir Philip Sydney, 1586 (c1815). Philip Sidney (1554-1586) English soldier, statesman poet, and patron of poets was appointed Governor of Flushing in the Netherlands in 1585. He was mortally wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Zutphen in which the Dutch and English defeated the Spanish on 22 September 1586, and died at Arnhem 26 days later.
