Sir William Russell at the Battle of Zutphen, 1586, (c1830s). Creator: J Rogers

Sir William Russell at the Battle of Zutphen, 1586, (c1830s). The Battle of Zutphen took place on 22 September 1586, near the village of Warnsveld and the town of Zutphen in Holland, (the Netherlands). It was fought by the forces of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, aided by the English, against the Spanish. English nobleman William Russell, 1st Baron Russell of Thornhaugh (died 1613), is possibly the figure with raised arm. Sir Philip Sidney was shot in the thigh during the battle and died of his wounds. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
