Colossal Prize Bride-Cake Exhibited at the Albany State Fair, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Colossal Prize Bride-Cake Exhibited at the Albany State Fair, 1850. Wedding cake made by Benjamin Briare, ...elevated on ornamented scroll pedestals...with a bridal wreath of flowers, the whole being surmounted by a brilliantly carved altar, supported by eight dolphins...Strewn upon the altar are agricultural implements, fruits and vegetables of every species, even to the humble potato. In the centre is erected a medallion, whose sides are beautifully modelled in relief. On one side is Ceres, the goddess of Agriculture...This medallion is entwined with a magnificent wreath of flowers, and resting upon it are two winged Cupids, bearing a fancifully wrought presentation pitcher. The height of the Cake is 3 ½ feet; diameter, 23 inches...This is, altogether, a magnificent specimen of what an Albany paper calls "Pastry and Civilization". From "Illustrated London News", 1850
