The Church of Santa Pudentiana at Rome - from an original sketch, 1850. Pudentiana was the daughter of the Roman Senator Servilius Pudens, who married Claudia, the daughter of the British chieftain Caractacus, after that celebrated warrior had settled in Rome, and who, with his whole family, embraced the Christian faith...The Church, in its present state, is the work of the architect Francis Volterra, who restored it at the expense of a Cardinal of the Caetani family. It is situated...at the entrance of a little cross street leading out of the Via delle Quatro Fontane, close to the piazza in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The square bell-tower attached to it is a characteristic erection of the middle ages...We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr. Richard Ford, the author of the "Handbook of Spain, " for the Drawing whence the accompanying Illustration has been engraved'.
