Caroline Chisholm addressing a crowd from the emigrant ship Ballengeich, 1852. Caroline Chisholm (nee Jones) (1808-1877), British philanthropist and reformer, was born at Wootton, near Northampton. Known as The Emigrants Friend, she campaigned for improvement in conditions for female emigrants to Australia, and for family emigration.
