Building the great steam-frigate Warrior at the Thames Ironworks, Blackwall, 1860. Admiral Sir Baldwin Wake Walker, Surveyor of the Navy, was responsible for the Royal Navy's warship construction programme during the 1850s naval arms race and at the time of the introduction of the Ironclad warship. It was his decision to build HMS Warrior. She was the second largest ship in the world, after the Great Eastern, and was constructed, under the immediate superintendence of Captain Ford, the managing director'. The Warrior was armour plated, and built to carry 36 guns. From Illustrated London News, 1860. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector/Heritage Images
