Attic Red-Figure Pelike, Kerch Style, about 380 BC.
Additional Info:A: Grypomachy. On the left, a griffin to right attacks an Arimasp. The warrior stands on a rock, right hand raised and holding a pair of spears. From the far left, another Arimasp runs to help his comrade. He carries a pelta (device: snake) and a spear. On the right, before a flowering tree, another griffin attacks a third Arimasp, who tries to defend himself with an axe in his right hand. Each Arimasp wears an alopekis; a one-piece sleeved undergarment and leggings (with serrated stripes alternating with rows of dots); a sleeveless, belted tunic; and shoes. The Griffins have white bodies, spines along the back of the neck, and a row of white dots along the upper edge of each wing.
B: Mantle figures. Three himation-clad youths with thick white fillets in their hair. The two on the left face right, the third faces left. The pelike has a flaring mouth with an overhanging lip. The handles are ridged and the foot takes the form of a spreading disk. On the side of the lip, and above and below the figural scenes, an egg pattern with dots in the interstices (for the band at the neck on side A, these dots are replaced by vertical lines). Under each handle, vertical addorsed palmettes with tendrils, dotted triangular hearts, and dotted triangles at the tip of the central frond. The lower edge and underside of the foot are reserved. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
