Arrest of William Franklin, New Jersey, 1776 (c1880). The illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, William Franklin (1731-1813) was colonial governor of New Jersey when the America Revolution began. A staunch loyalist, he was arrested by order of the Provincial Congress of New Jersey and held as a prisoner of war until 1778.
