Framed Print of Amphitrite, Late 17th-early 18th century. Creators: Unknown, Follower of Filippo Lauri
Amphitrite, Late 17th-early 18th century.
Additional Info: In the centre of the painting, a nude woman is sitting in a chariot drawn by two dolphins. The scene probably represents the return of Amphitrite, a Nereid (sea nymph), who fled from the advances of Neptune (Greek Poseidon), the god of the sea, enamoured with her and who sent dolphins to persuade her to return. The chariot of Amphitrite, as it sails across the waves of the sea, is surrounded by dancing Nereids and Tritons that blow conchs with glee to celebrate Amphitrite accepting Neptune's proposal. The small Cupid, holding a bow, is placing his little hand on her left shoulder. Held by a winged putto, fabric flows in the air to create a semi-circular arc above Amphitrite's head, an element previously often found in representations of the sea goddess in the art of antiquity.
